2001 a year of strong growth for Deutsche Telekom

Bonn, January 17, 2024
  • Number of T-DSL lines marketed more than tripled compared with 2000 financial year to 2.2 million at the end of 2001
  • VoiceStream has total of approximately 7 million subscribers after record growth of 668,000 new subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2001
  • T-Mobile Deutschland and One 2 One increase number of subscribers in fourth quarter by around 500,000 each
  • T-Online increases number of customers by more than 35% in 2001 financial year to 10.7 million

The past financial year was one of strong growth rates in all important product areas for Deutsche Telekom. The strategy of expanding into new, future-oriented business areas, such as T-DSL, continued just as successfully as the Group's internationalization, particularly with a clear increase in the number of subscribers at the American mobile communications company VoiceStream acquired last year.

Number of mobile communications subscribers increases by 20 million to
almost 67 million

With 66.9 million subscribers served by its mobile communications companies and shareholdings, Deutsche Telekom further extended its position as one of the leading mobile communications providers in the world. The number of mobile communications subscribers served by all Deutsche Telekom's subsidiaries and minority shareholdings increased by 20 million, more than 40 %, over the course of the year. Deutsche
Telekom's majority shareholdings in Germany, the USA, the United Kingdom,
the Czech Republic, Hungary and Croatia served a total of 48.9 million mobile communications subscribers at the end of 2001. This represents an increase
of around 10 million new subscribers, a growth of approximately 27 %.

The number of subscribers in Germany increased by around 4 million over the previous year. T-Mobile Deutschland is the unassailable market leader with 23.1 million subscribers. The net subscriber growth in the fourth quarter was about 526,000; the level of contract subscribers was disproportionately high at around 56 %.

VoiceStream recorded growth of more than 45 % in the 2001 financial year

In the USA, VoiceStream concluded 2001 with a record quarter: The company increased its subscriber base by 668,000 to approximately 7 million. The reason for this considerable subscriber growth, besides the traditionally strong Christmas season business, was the successful implementation of customer retention measures. With net increases of more than 87 % in the fourth quarter, VoiceStream is continuing with its focus on contract subscribers. Overall, VoiceStream increased the number of subscribers in 2001 on a comparable basis by 2.2 million, more than 45 %.

In the United Kingdom, One2One increased its total number of subscribers by 2.1 million to 10.4 million at the end of 2001. Net growth in the fourth quarter amounted to 493,000 subscribers.

T-DSL develops into a mass market

Demand for the fast Internet access boomed throughout the past financial year. The number of lines marketed considerably more than tripled from 0.6 million at the end of 2000 to 2.2 million at December 31, 2001. Deutsche Telekom has left other DSL providers in Europe and the USA far behind with these figures.

The demand for ISDN accesses continued to develop pleasingly with double-digit rates. The number of ISDN channels increased considerably by 18 % from 17.3 million to 20.4 million in 2001. Deutsche Telekom's world-leading position was thus further extended.

10.7 million T-Online subscribers

With approximately 10.7 million subscribers at the end of 2001, T-Online developed very well, registering over 35 % subscriber growth compared with the 2000 financial year. T-Online recorded it greatest growth in the year with 0.9 million new subscribers in the fourth quarter.

The key figures for the full 2001 financial year will be published on March 5, 2002. The certified financial statements will be published at the Press Conference on Deutsche Telekom's Financial Statements, scheduled for April 23, 2002.
