T-Mobile to be a main sponsor of the UEFA 2004 European Football Championship

22 October 2023
  • Exclusive football content available to T-Mobile customers across five European markets
  • Sports sponsorship to be a key driver of t-zones usage

T-Mobile today announced that it is to be a main sponsor of the UEFA 2004 European Football Championship, which takes place in Portugal next summer.

As one of the Official Partners at UEFA EURO 2004, T-Mobile will be offering exclusive services and content to its customers in five European markets, during one of Europe’s premier sporting events.

The services will be offered exclusively to more than 45 million T-Mobile customers in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, the UK, and the Netherlands. The tournament starts on 12 June 2004, with the final taking place at the Da Luz Stadium in Lisbon on 4 July.

René Obermann, CEO of T-Mobile International AG & Co. KG, commented: “T-Mobile is proud to be associated with UEFA in supporting one of Europe’s most prestigious sporting events.

“UEFA EURO 2004 will be one of next year’s great international occasions. It will provide an ideal opportunity for an international organisation like T-Mobile to bring its customers closer to the action.”

Gerard Aigner, UEFA CEO, commented: “I am delighted to announce that T-Mobile has been signed up as the eighth Official Partner of the UEFA EURO 2004.

“Alongside the traditional forms of communication, T-Mobile will ensure that the UEFA European Football Championship in Portugal, one of the world’s largest sporting events, will be available to fans at any time, via their mobile phone, wherever they may be.”

T-Mobile is already extensively involved in professional football, both internationally and within its individual markets. The deal with UEFA follows its existing partnership with FIFA to present the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany. Local sponsorships include FC Bayern Munich in Germany, the Austrian national league, and the Czech Republic’s national team. In the UK, T-Mobile is the Official Mobile Network of both Celtic and Rangers Football Clubs.

Nikesh Arora, Chief Marketing Officer for T-Mobile, said: “The deal with UEFA marks the latest stage in T-Mobile’s sponsorship strategy, which uses big-name partnerships in sport and entertainment to drive customer loyalty, and increased brand awareness.

“Compelling and relevant sponsorships, used as the basis for mutimedia content, will ensure the continued uptake of mobile data services by the mass market, helping T-Mobile to exceed its data targets for 2004.”

The sponsorship is likely to spearhead T-Mobile’s t-zones offering in 2004, through a range of exciting UEFA EURO 2004 mobile multimedia offerings. Past sporting events have created a significant increase in usage of t-zones services - by as much as 40% during the 2002 World Cup.

Arora concluded: “This is an exciting deal that will benefit all participants – the sponsors, the organizers and, most of all, the customers.”
