February, 15th 2005:   T-Mobile today announces a major addition to its Office in your Pocket TM range of devices with the world’s first 2.5G, 3G and Wi-Fi MDA, the latest BlackBerry 7100t TM  as well a doubling of the number of its Wi-Fi HotSpots by the end of 2005.  New devices and services come with new, simpler and better value tariffs.

René Obermann, CEO of T-Mobile said: “One in five European workers are already mobile – meaning they spend significant time travelling and out of the office. That’s over 33 million workers, and its increasing fast.  What they need is their office when they’re out of their office. And that’s what we’re doing, literally putting your Office in your PocketTM
T-Mobile’s range of devices today genuinely allows you to do that.

Integrated 2.5G, 3G and Wi-Fi mobile devices

  • T-Mobile MDA IV : the world’s first 2.5G, 3G and Wi-Fi MDA

T-Mobile’s new MDA IV integrates 2.5G, 3G and Wi-Fi and genuinely places the office in your pocket, with functionality and power similar to a desktop PC.  The device seamlessly connects to the fastest T-Mobile network available, allowing users to have access to a broadband internet connection wherever they are while on the move.  The device, which is 100 cm2 is like a mini laptop that fits into a pocket – and includes a 520 Mhz Intel processor and the Windows Mobile operating system.

René Oberman said: “T-Mobile’s MDAs have proved to be hugely successful with 100,000 sold across Europe and 40% market share in Germany alone. This new device, with 2.5, 3G and Wi-Fi combined is another milestone in the development of Office in your Pocket devices.”

The MDA IV is also a triband terminal, operating on GSM 900, 1800 and 1900 networks, allowing T-Mobile customers to use the device seamlessly in the US, Europe and Asia.

SMS, MMS and e-mails can be typed using the full qwerty keyboard.  The 640 x 480 pixel colour touch screen is ideal to display text, images and internet pages.  Additional functions include two integrated video and still cameras, and loudspeakers.  Once open, the screen can be turned round to turn the mini-laptop into a PDA with a touch-screen.

Like other MDA models, the MDA IV includes full Office functionality (e-mail push-service, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), integrated video and music players and equipped with USB and Bluetooth interfaces for synchronization of data with a PC.

The device will be available from this Summer in Germany, and will follow in other markets.

  • T-Mobile Blackberry 7100t TM  – this latest BlackBerry which offers Bluetooth headset functionality and full qwerty keyboard with an enhanced colour screen significantly improves users’ experience.

T-Mobile to double Wi-Fi footprint

T-Mobile unveils today ambitious plans to further expand its Wi-Fi footprint across the world and aims to have 20,000 hotspots across the world by the end of the year.  Currently, T-Mobile has over 5,300 hotspots in the US and over 7,000 hotpots across Europe.

As part of this, T-Mobile is offering WiFi hotspots on trains and the first truly broadbrand Wi-Fi service on trains in the UK.  The service is currently being trialled in the UK on the London to Brighton route, one of the busiest railway routes for business people travelling to and from London and will be commercially launched in Spring.

The service is made possible by installing Wi-Fi antennae inside train carriages, which in turn is connected to a WiMax network running alongside the tracks. Careful network planning has allowed the service to maintain a constant connection throughout the entire journey, including in tunnels and under bridges. WiMax, a fixed-wireless technology based on the 802.16 standard, allows for high speed connectivity of up to 32 Mbps bi-directionally to and from the train.

The service will allow commuters an additional 55 minutes of productive time in each direction – allowing them to read and respond to e-mails, surf the internet and connect securely to office systems while they travel.

New simple and better value tariffs

T-Mobile is offering simpler, more transparent and better value tariffs:

  • All you can eat tariff for Wi-Fi – UK - £20 + VAT per month, unlimited wireless access.
  • Time-based, ‘all-bearer’ tariff – Germany - 35 Euros for 10 hours, customers can download or upload as much data as they like on 2.5G, 3G or Wi-Fi. Three networks, one price.
