“One in three contract customers say their bills are higher than they expected. Two thirds of mobile customers are on pre-pay, largely because they don't want unpredictable bills;
but they can pay a high price.

Today, T-Mobile launches U-Fix to put customers back in control of what they spend.”

Brian McBride, Managing Director, T-Mobile UK

  • 31% of UK contract mobile phone users are “always” or “most of the time” surprised by the size of their mobile bills (TNS, March, 20051)

  • 68% of UK mobile phone customers use pay-as-you-go to control their spend, but typically pay significantly more than contract customers

  • U-Fix combines total bill control with the value of contract rates

  • Simple, fixed monthly bills; low call costs; free text messages included; choice of free handset; no more over-spending

  • Launch offer of 1,000 free text messages

Brian McBride, Managing Director of T-Mobile UK, said:

“Mobile telephony is something that practically everyone takes for granted---and rightly so. But the mobile industry has to recognise that there is deep dissatisfaction among a great many customers about the size and unpredictability of their bills and the complexity of mobile tariffs. It’s in our own interests to fix these problems.

At present, we spend hundreds of millions of pounds a year to attract new customers, only to see many of them leave because they don’t like unpredictable bills and too high calling costs. So, we’re fixing this with U-Fix---giving customers total control over their bill spend and much better value than typical pre-pay rates.”

U-Fix costs either £15 or £25 a month, with the choice of making calls and sending messages UK nationally to any network, at any time or just at off-peak times.

  • As an introductory offer, there are 1,000 free text messages to be used in the first 3 months
  • Picture messaging and internet access are available, and there is a starter pack of 10 free picture messages and 1MB of free ‘t-zone’ browsing.

If, during any month, customers approach the end of their chosen allocation of minutes and texts, they will be sent an SMS message alerting them and offering the ability to top up their bundle of minutes and text messages.

U-Fix is aimed particularly at students and early earners, both groups being high users of mobile but with typically lower incomes, and at parents wanting to provide their children with mobile phones. T-Mobile estimates there are some 3.2 million parents contributing to the cost of their children’s phones. Currently, they face the choice of paying often high pre-pay call rates or losing control over what their children spend. There are some 1.8 million students over age 18 using pay-as-you-go phones, and some 4 million so-called pre-pay switchers over age 18.

There are millions of customers who don't like the idea of signing a contract for their mobile phone when it seems too open-ended and they don’t know what they’ll end-up paying.” said Brian McBride. “The traditional answer has been pay-as-you-go. But this can come at a big price.  U-Fix costs less a month than most pre-pay customers actually spend, but with far better value, and it puts the customer firmly back in control of what they spend.”

U-Fix is part of a broad approach T-Mobile is taking to make mobile more affordable and accessible. T-Mobile has backed the launch of low-cost operators, including Virgin Mobile, easyMobile and Carphone Warehouse’s Fresh, all of which use T-Mobile’s leading UK network, making it the most widely used network in the UK by customer numbers. T-Mobile will also be reviewing its own pre-pay tariffs in the coming months.

“It’s not about treating customers as if they were all the same”, said Brian McBride. “It’s about delivering value and quality service to meet individual customers’ needs. It’s also about rewarding loyalty. We’ve heard a lot recently about 5p or 6p low cost calls. But, bear in mind, these are so far introductory offers; you pay extra for text messages; you don’t get free handsets; and none of them comes close to the 3.3p per minute U-Fix can give off-peak. Consumers are wise to the fact that cheap doesn’t always mean good.”

U-Fix launch is being launched with extensive TV, press and poster advertising, starting this evening with a slot in Footballers’ Wives.
